Stiltsville party!

Well back in June (this story has been on the shelf a while!) I was pleasantly surprised one fine Saturday by my friend Lisa (2nd row, 3rd pic, girl on the right) calling me up and inviting me out to a party at a Stiltsville house.

Stiltsville is this cool little place in the middle of the Ocean, where all these houses are built on stilts. Yeah thats right stilts, hence the name. You can only get there by boat.
The rumor is that it was used by Al Capone and his cronies back in the prohibition to smuggle in the booze that flowed freely in Florida flaunting in the face of the federal offense, back in the 20s or 30s... but enough about rumor, get the truth about stiltsville over at www.stiltsville.org. The City of Miami has been trying to get Stiltsville demolished for a number of years now, and I am glad I finally got to go to a party out there, before its gone!

It is definately a cool place to visit, and it was a much cooler party. Thrown by The Bachelors Inc. it was a fantastic event, catered by Shortys BBQ it was amazing, but wait my words arent good enough, so I thought I would treat you to a few pictures. Hey I am actually in a few...

Heres a link to some Previous Stiltsville party pictures...

May 5th Party ...and NO I am not in any of these!

Suitcase of Shattered Dreams

Well this past weekend was really, really crazy. I do have plenty of material for blogging. However that will come later as recollections. This installment will only focus on one small observation I made this weekend. A weekend fertile with stories to be told, yet this particular one made an impression on me. See what you think.

So during this past weekend as I was walking from one place to another around here on South Beach. I happened to notice something. Something most other people wouldn't really give a second thought to. Yet it bothered me, quite a bit actually.

As I was walking along I noticed a suitcase. A medium sized black "airport bag" I believe is the proper term for them. The square suitcases with the retractable handle and wheels on the opposite side.
I noticed it laying there upside down on the curb.
There all along the gutter and in the bushes on the other side of the sidewalk were strewn articles of clothing.

This sickened me.

This was obviously someone's things. Someone's belongings. Someone had spent time picking this stuff out, packing it, planning their vacation. Possibly even gone out shopping to buy some new things to bring. Here they were all unceremoniously discarded.

Having recently lost an item of mine I could only empathize with the person whom this stuff belonged to. Thinking of the good fortune I had to get my lost item returned to me. I collected whatever articles I could spot laying around and placed them back in the bag, with intent to return them. There was no label or tag, or any other identifying item to be found. So all I could do was to load the bag up and set it there on the curb, hopefully to be identified by its rightful owner.

I could only think about how that person must feel. Possibly distressed and almost certainly upset. It probably ruined their vacation.

I couldn't return the bag, and I can only hope that this person may have found it, doubtful, but possible.

There are all kinds of people in a big city like Miami. Most are good. I like to think that Miami is one of the most friendly cities I have been to. Yet to this person, Miami is probably only a source of pain right now.

It only takes one lousy thing like this to ruin someone's vacation, and the reputation of a City.

For that I am sorry.
